Auto study's big loser: Mercedes

Auto study's big loser: Mercedes:

Forget all this stuff about Japanese metal once again dominating Consumer Reports and selected American models like Ford's Fusion and GM's Cadillac CTS making some serious moves into the upper echelons.

All that we mostly know, and some of it is mildly encouraging.

For the real head-slapper, look at the bottom, the very bottom of the Consumer Reports' 2007 Annual Auto Issue, beneath Ford, beneath GM, beneath VW, the Koreans and even lowly Chrysler, now living in automotive limbo as its owners decide whether it's worth keeping.

Look at which brand the editors of America's most respected, if occasionally flawed, consumers' magazine say they could not recommend at all -- not its bellwether sedan, not its roadster, not its American-made SUV, not even its flagship S-Class, ostensibly a statement about who's behind the wheel.

The big loser, the big fat zero staring out from the page, is Mercedes-Benz, the three-pointed star said to bespeak precision, class and engineering excellence, reputed to be the distillation of German automotive culture. Worse, the editors, in a quip that should land like a Scud missile in Stuttgart, say a 1998 Lexus LS400 had fewer problems and was more reliable than the 2006 Mercedes ML500.

Come again? An 8-year-old, warmed-over Toyota is preferable to a new Mercedes? This from the guys who can't get their parent company, DaimlerChrysler AG, to move fast enough to dump their weak sister, Chrysler? They're presiding over a brand that, at least according to one influential assessment, is even less dependable than the Chryslers they so love to trash?

Perceptions skewered

Talk about an inconvenient truth. It's not supposed to work this way for the masters of Mercedes, whose company gained $10 billion in market value over just five trading days last month at the suggestion of Chrysler getting the heave-ho and Mercedes going its merry way, solo.

Yes, Mercedes had a few lean years earlier in the decade, finishing way down the charts in influential German quality surveys. But the official spin is that they've since recovered, according to ADAC surveys and a company spokeswoman.

They're making money again -- $3.2 billion operating profit last year. Mercedes still boasts the high loyalty rates among luxury-car owners. And sales in the all-important U.S. market have grown in each of the past 13 years to 248,000 vehicles.

All of which means diddly to Consumer Reports or J.D. Power, which endeavor to ascertain how cars and trucks actually are, not how their makers want them to be or how their status-conscious owners believe them to be.

Weighing myth, reality

Which explains why Mercedes bosses with names like Hubbert and Cordes had, on occasion, basically said the participants in these nasty little American surveys on quality and reliability wouldn't know either if they fell on their head.

Doesn't matter what they or their engineers think. These assessments are so valued by many American buyers, so touted by dealers, so long as the brands they sell fared well, exactly because the surveys are so often reviled by folks who don't do so well in them.

They have authenticity, which may be more than can be said for Mercedes and its boast about "Leadership: 120 years later, the legend continues." Would that be legend -- or myth?

Civic Type-R for US

Honda Civic Type-R Coming to the US in 2010?

civic-type-r-sedan

During a recent press drive of the European Civic Type R, Winding Road’s European editor Matt Davis appears to have unofficial confirmation that Honda will be offering a Civic Type R in the U.S. in 2010.

Citing an assistant chief engineer, Davis says that the Type R for the States is unlikely to be based on the European Civic hatch, but will likely be based on the Japanese Domestic Market Civic Type R four-door sedan. Since Honda sells a four-door Civic in the States, it will be easier to federalize the Type R.

Last year, Honda previewed its JDM Civic Type R (shown), which uses a 2.0L four-cylinder developing nearly 220-hp. The JDM prototype featured an upgraded suspension and the typical body kit. The Civic Si is a nice performer, but it is seriously outclassed by cars like the Mazdaspeed3 and Subaru WRX.

New MB C-Class

MB C Class To Have More Aggressive Styling

2008-mercedes-c-class

The all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class will feature more aggressive styling than the European version when it arrives in the States this September, said Ernst Lieb, Mercedes-Benz USA president and CEO, in an interview with Automotive News.

Lieb didn’t provide any details about what “more aggressive” means, so we can only speculate, and speculate we will. The European C-Class will be available in Sport (shown) and Luxury models, and we expect that the U.S. will either get the Sport model only or get the Sport as its base model, with an even more aggressively styled car available on top of the Sport.

Honda Crossroads Headed to US.

The New Honda Crossroad is Headed to the US

In case you missed it, the 7-passenger Honda Crossroad cross-over mini-ute just went on sale in Japan today. (http://world.honda.com/news/2007/4070222CROSSROAD/). That's not really news, though as official photos and some sketchy details have been around since December.

What makes that news more interesting is that we've just received word that this vehicle is actually headed to the US, said to slot into Honda's lineup between the CR-V and Pilot. With 7-passenger seating capacity stuffed into rather diminutive packaging, it will be interesting to see how it is priced and if Honda will spec a different motor and interior grade for our market, as it was our understanding that this vehicle is actually positioned beneath the CR-V in Japan, which in its latest incarnation has moved somewhat upscale.

The Crossroad interior photos certainly show a more spartan atmosphere than the quasi-lux trappings of the '07 CR-V. The Crossroad is currently being offered in the Japanese market with the choice of 140ps R18 or 150ps R20 motor driving either the front wheels or all four of them via Honda's RealTime AWD system.

Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia Recall

GM to recall Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia for faulty airbag sensors

2007-saturn-outlook

General Motors has recalled almost of its new 2007 Saturn Outlook and GMC Acadia crossovers because of potentially faulty airbag sensors that control the front airbag deployment. The problem with the sensors is reported to be a software issue, which may prevent the front air bags from deploying in a crash.

The recall includes all of 13,032 of the SUVs built until early this month. GM spokesman Alan Adler said it doesn’t include those built after February 2.

GM will resolve the software issue by reprogramming the computer that controls the air bags. The service only take about 25 minutes. GM said most of the vehicles affected by the recall are still on dealer lots and will be fixed before they’re sold.

ASCC Will Not be NSX Replacement

ASCC Sent Back to the Drawing Board

advanced-sports-car-concept

When Honda unveiled the ASCC (Advanced Sports Car Concept) at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, the concept was said to preview the replacement for the venerable Acura NSX. But the Advanced Sports Car Concept was just a preview. There would unveil an updated version later this year at the Tokyo More Show, which would be a much closer representation of Acura’s v10 supercar that should appear in showrooms in 2009.

However, Honda’s top executives weren’t pleased with the car and have sent it back to the drawing board. Apparently, while the reviews weren’t negative, the concept didn’t get the thunderous response that Honda was looking for.

The basic proportions, V10 engine, and all-wheel-drive will remain, but the rest of the car — at least the appearance — will likely change before production.

As of right now, there's no certainty as to what (if any) NSX is going to appear at the Tokyo Motor Show this fall.

Corvette SS

Corvette "Blue Devil" will be the new Corvette SS

corvette-z06

Earlier this month General Motors made it official, there will be a higher performance Corvette. While that came as little surprise, considering all the spy shots and all of the inuendo by GM execs, it was still nice to hear that was official. Long known as the “Blue Devil”, the Corvette is expected to wear the Super Sport badge and will be called the Corvette SS.

Back in December, GM admitted that it got carried away with the use of the SS badge, and it will be more careful in the future. The first sign of this was the Chevrolet Equinox Sport, which was expected to wear an SS badge. Clearly, if anything deserves to wear an SS badge, a 600-hp Corvette has to be one.

The Corvette SS is expected to debut that the 3008 Detroit Auto Show, and will be known internally as the GMX245-SSC (GMX245 is GM’s internal code for the C6 Corvette).

Touareg R50

Volkswagen developing R-badged Touareg R50?

February 19, 2007

vw-r-line-touareg

Volkswagen is developing an R-badged version of it Touareg SUV to join the automaker’s Passat R36 and Golf R32, according to AutoTelegraaf, citing a VW employee. Unlike the gas engines in the R36 and R32, The Touareg, which will liekly be called the R50, would feature an uprated version of the V10 TDI diesel. Power figures for the R-badged Touareg are unknown, but tuners have gotten 365-hp and 625 lb-ft. of torque out of the V10.

While the R50 would likely look something like the R-line Touareg (shown), which comes from VW’s Individual customization program, expect the R50 to feature something unique to differentiate it from an R-line. There’s also speculation of an even more powerful R-badged Touareg with VW 6.0L W12 (the R60?)

Audi A5 Details

Say hello to the 2008 Audi A5

February 20, 2007

2008 audi a5

Audi was scheduled to officially unveil its all-new A5 coupe at the Geneva Motor Show next month. However, as has been the case recently, official shots of the A5 have surfaced on the web. The Audi A5 coupe is based on Audi new Modular platform which will underpin, the next generation A4, A6, and A8. The new coupe is larger than the A4 sedan, but not quite as large as the A6, slotting nicely in between the two vehicles.

We are quite impressed with the styling of the A5. The rear three-quarter view is quite muscular, and the detail line along the car’s bodyside is elegant and graceful. Audi could have made the front of the car a little more dynamic — like some of the illustrations. But, overall, the new A5 is impressive.

The Audi A5 is expected to be offered with a 3.2L FSI V6, and 4.2L FSI V8. We will also likely see a 3.0L TDI V6 later (Europe will almost certainly get this from the start). The A5 will be available with several six-speed manual and S-Tronic (DSG), as well as a CVT. All-wheel drive will also be available across the line. Audi will also offer a high-performance S5, which may also debut in Geneva, and is expected to offer an RS5 variant further down the line.

Audi will stage the world premiere of the A5 at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show next month.
